Small-Ruminant Genomics

Türkiye has a population of 46.7 million sheep and 11.2 million goats (reference date: 31 December 2025). In contrast, the supply of genomic services for small ruminants is markedly limited compared to cattle. Because our panel and analysis infrastructure is designed to be species-independent, we are able to provide services in this area.

Services

  • Genetic characterization and diversity analysis in native breeds — including projects aimed at conserving genetic resources.
  • Reference population setup and genomic breeding value infrastructure for community-based breeding programs.
  • Genomically assisted selection of rams and bucks.
  • Within-flock relatedness tracking and mating planning.
  • Phenotype–genotype integration for milk yield, fertility, and growth traits.

Working Model

Because reference population depth for small ruminants is more limited than for cattle, work in this line is carried out in two phases. In the first phase, population characterization and phenotype-recording infrastructure are established; in the second phase, the prediction model is activated. We do not offer breeding value estimation before the first phase is complete — a prediction produced before accuracy reaches a meaningful level is not decision support, it is noise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because reference population depth for small ruminants is more limited than for cattle, work in this line is carried out in two phases. We do not offer breeding value estimation before the first phase is complete — a prediction produced before accuracy reaches a meaningful level is not decision support, it is noise.

It can be done from birth. Because the genetic makeup does not change with age, the result remains valid for life. Early testing creates value because it allows the decision to be made early.

The accuracy is reported separately for every trait and is not hidden. Accuracy depends on the size of the reference population and the heritability of the trait. We do not present a low-accuracy trait as if it were high-accuracy.

Because a herdbook record and testing at an authorized laboratory are required, tests that fall within the scope of the subsidy are planned through the authorized laboratories we partner with. We jointly assess which of your animals is eligible for which item.

Contact and Getting Started

The process begins with a non-binding needs consultation. In this meeting, we discuss your herd's current status, your goals, and your budget framework; together we determine the package that suits you.
