Cattle Genomic Testing and Breeding Value Estimation

This is our main genomic service line. It reveals the genetic potential of the animals in your herd at an early age, objectively and reproducibly.

    Traits Covered
Calving ease (direct and maternal), stillbirth tendency.
  • Trait Group
    Robustness
    Traits Covered
    Longevity / productive life.

Index and Selection

Composite index
The Vethia Selection Index. The formula and the weight of every trait are written out explicitly in the report; it can be customized to the operation's goal.
Selection recommendation
Based on the index ranking, the herd is divided into three groups: breeding nucleus, commercial group, and planned cull candidates. Group boundaries are determined jointly according to the operation's goal and heifer requirement; a fixed percentage is not imposed.

Genetic Defect Screening

The most costly mistakes in breeding decisions arise from unknowingly mating carrier animals. Our defect screening module reports the carrier status of every animal.

  • The complete list of defects screened is included in the report. Equally important: the defects not screened are also listed explicitly.
  • For every result, it is stated whether the detection is based on a causal variant or a linked marker. This distinction is not hidden in the report.
  • The result is one of three values: carrier, clear, or undetermined. For undetermined results, the reason is stated and no prediction is forced.
  • The mating module automatically flags carrier × carrier combinations and excludes them from recommendations.

What Our Report Contains

Our standard genomic breeding value report consists of eight sections. The structure is fixed, so reports for different animals and different periods can be compared directly.

Ear tag number, operation number, date of birth, sex, breed, dam and sire information; sample type and collection date; genotyping laboratory, panel name, and reference genome version; report ID, version, and content summary.

Individual call rate, number of matched markers, number of unmatched markers, sex verification, and parentage match if available. The section concludes with an explicit PASS / FAIL decision. No breeding value is produced for an animal that falls below the threshold, and this is not hidden.

For every trait: the estimated value, unit of measure, accuracy, and within-population percentile. Traits with low accuracy are visually distinguished.

The index formula and the weight of every trait are written out explicitly. Within-herd ranking and the breeding nucleus / commercial group / cull recommendation are presented in this section.

The list of defects screened and not screened; whether each result is a causal variant or a linked marker; the resulting carrier, clear, or undetermined status, and the reason in case of uncertainty.

Relatedness coefficient, expected increase in offspring relatedness, a list of recommended bulls, the expected offspring index value for each recommendation, and a defect-overlap warning.

The evidence layer of every numerical value; the sources of the reference population and heritabilities used; and an explicit limitations section — which questions this report does not answer.

The herd's distribution by trait, its strengths and weaknesses, the relatedness trend, and an improvement roadmap for the coming period.

Frequently Asked Questions

It can be done from birth. Because the genetic makeup does not change with age, the result remains valid for life. Early testing creates value because it allows the decision to be made early.

Ear tissue (TSU), blood, hair root. The sample collection kit and protocol are provided by us.

Newborn female calves, heifer candidates, breeding bull candidates, and the existing milking herd.

Our audited panel layer contains 32,427 SNPs. Every marker is individually verified for chromosome position, reference genome version, and evidence class. 20K, 50K, and 100K density options can be used.

The accuracy is reported separately for every trait and is not hidden. Accuracy depends on the size of the reference population and the heritability of the trait. We do not present a low-accuracy trait as if it were high-accuracy.

Because a herdbook record and testing at an authorized laboratory are required, tests that fall within the scope of the subsidy are planned through the authorized laboratories we partner with. We jointly assess which of your animals is eligible for which item.

Contact and Getting Started

The process begins with a non-binding needs consultation. In this meeting, we discuss your herd's current status, your goals, and your budget framework; together we determine the package that suits you.
